Initial Bulletin and Information
The next BetterBath meeting on 5 July will discuss Visions for the River in Bath. All are welcome to come and have their say.
It is often said that, except near Pulteney Bridge, Bath turns its back on the river. This could be about to change:
· New housing development is planned on the Bath Western Riverside site;
· The Council is working on further regeneration plans for the river corridor;
· Bath Rugby wants a larger stadium either at the Recreation Ground or at another site close to the centre of the city;
· There are suggestions for new leisure activities on the river and the riverside;
· Renewed interest is being shown in hydro-electric schemes.
These developments could be hugely positive for a neglected area of Bath, but they would need to be managed sensitively, with full account taken of flood risk issues; protection and enhancement of the ecology; and respect for the World Heritage Site.
The aim of the meeting is to give people who live and work in Bath an opportunity to discuss these issues, and say what they think should be done. The keynote speaker will be Professor Chris Baines, a leading environmental campaigner, writer and broadcaster, and advisor to conservation charities and government agencies. He is a member of the Urban Regeneration Panel set up by B&NES Council to guide, review and challenge new development proposals in the city. John Betty, the Council's strategic director of major projects, and David Lawrence, divisional director for tourism, leisure and culture will outline what is known about new regeneration plans. The meeting will be chaired by Gerald Chown, chairman of the Macaulay/Prospect Residents Association, and a former chairman of the Royal United Hospital NHS Trust.
Doors will open at 18.00, when Forum supporters can buy coffee and tea or a soft drink. The meeting will start promptly at 18.30, and should run till about 20.15. There will then be a chance to buy a glass of wine and continue the discussion informally.
