The first meeting for 2009 will discuss Bath’s World Heritage Status.

Bath has been a World Heritage Site since 1987 and is the only complete city in the UK to hold this status. Many local people and organisations regard our World Heritage status as an accolade to be treasured and jealously protected: others say that it holds back necessary development and turns the city into a museum.

A recent study carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers on behalf of the Government reported that it could be said that ‘WHS status is what you make of it’. Where the status has been used to full effect it has provided benefits by bringing partners together and leveraging additional funding and not infrequently it has led to new developments and enhanced educational benefits as well as improved conservation and even regeneration in some locations. Where these opportunities have not been seized there have been more limited benefits.

This meeting is your opportunity to have your say on the benefits of WHS status and what Bath should make of it. Does it give the city a boost? Is it a blight on efforts to move forward into the 21st Century? Is it only relevant to the tourist sector, or does it matter for residents? What do our young people think? What can Bath learn from other World Heritage Sites in the UK or abroad?

Sam Holliday, Editor of the Bath Chronicle, will chair the discussion and David Beeton, recently appointed Chair of Bath’s World Heritage Steering Group, will set the scene. This meeting is being organised in association with the Bath Preservation Trust as part of a wider programme of events to celebrate World Heritage Day, Saturday 18 April.

The meeting will take place at the Building of Bath Collection at the Countess of Huntingdon’s Chapel, The Vineyards, The Paragon, Bath, BA1 5NA. Doors will open at 10.30, when coffee and tea will be available, and the discussion will start promptly at 11am.
